Tip 1

Create a running document to jot down ideas or research questions. This can help with poster and manuscript preparation, as well as inform career decisions.

"My personal favorite is Microsoft OneNote! It's also great for word vomiting, brainstorming, and drafting."

Interview of the Month

Bryan McSpadden

Second-Year Gradute Student

What is it like entering the second year of your PhD program?

Exciting and nerve-wracking! We really hit the ground running as soon as our semester starts, since we start seeing actual patients within the first couple of months. I’m super excited to develop my skills as a therapist, but it’s also pretty anxiety-inducing to have someone else’s mental well-being in your hands as you help them navigate the various stressors in their life... If I had to pick what surprised me the most, though, I would say that I underestimated the amount of independence you receive as a student. It is pretty much fully up to you when it comes to how you spend most of your time, especially when it comes to research. Your 1st year classes are pretty structured, but how much time you choose to dedicate to personal projects outside of them is fully up to you...
